Announcing the launch of ‘Joining the Dots’
We announce the arrival of Joining the Dots, a major new support programme for people working in independent music.
It’s been two years in the making but we’re pleased to say that our Joining the Dots programme will open for applications on 9 December 2013.
We want Joining the Dots to make a real difference, so do check it out, have a look at our Joining the Dots website and film. And most importantly, if you have an idea you’d like to apply for, or know someone who might, do something about it: apply or pass this Edition on.
We’ve worked really hard to make Joining the Dots happen, so we hope you like what we’ve made!

Finding new models for financing live music is a key area for Joining the Dots
Up to £10,000 each and expert mentoring for six brilliant ideas
Joining the Dots will provide artists, promoters and others working in independent music in England with ‘seed corn’ funding of up to £10,000 to test alternative models they think could help make live music more viable. We’re focusing on 3 specific areas:
§ ? Financing touring, commissioning and presenting live music
§ ? Using digital technology to increase live attendance and income
§ ? Developing young adult audiences for specialist independent music, such as jazz, folk and electronica
As well as a grant of up to £10,000, we’ll also work alongside recipients to support them to turn their idea into reality, partner them with a research mentor, and plug them into a supportive peer network.
Applications open 9 December
How to apply? It’s simple
Applications are open 9 December 2013 – 31 January 2014. We’ve kept the initial application process as simple as possible. In the first instance all anyone needs to do is send us a short film they’ve made about their idea and why it’s a potential game-changer.
We want to build ‘a community of the curious and the generous’
Sharing know-how and joining things (and people) up
From March 2014, we’ll also be hosting a series of Joining the Dots ‘semesters of learning’, designed to help people make a more viable living from independent music. Expect webinars, blogs, online resources and meet ups, featuring some of the savviest people working in music and beyond. It’s all part of our quest to help people share what they know…

Joining the Dots – the movie!
Interviewed for our launch film, folk artist Sam Lee says; “The tricks of yesterday don’t necessarily apply to today”. Musician and BBC 6Music presenter Tom Robinson tells us that”there’s never been a better time for artists with genuine talent to get heard”. “But”, he says, “that’s going to depend on us finding new models”.
