COVID-19 – Instrumental & Vocal Lessons Q&A
What happens to the instrumental/vocal lessons I’ve paid for but weren’t delivered?
If the school was open but refused access to the B&NES Music Service tutor will I still be reimbursed for any lessons my child didn’t receive – YES

We have been gathering information from each instrumental/vocal teacher regarding the number of lessons taught this year so that we have a clear and accurate record for each child. You will receive a refund if your child is not taken up online lessons this term. If your child is learning online, you will receive a reduced invoice this term.
We will continue to take advice from the Government and our partner departments in B&NES Council and will re-start lessons as soon as we are advised that we can.
Please be aware there is currently no date for lessons to re-start.
Can my child have lessons virtually/via the internet?
We are now taking bookings for instrumental lessons that can take place via a safe online portal, for September, that has been especially set up for instrumental teaching and learning. We will be prioritising students who received instrumental lessons in terms 3 and 4. Please scroll down to the FAQ for the current fees for lessons. You can book lessons at the following link:
Can my child continue to have lessons if they are attending school?
They will not be able to receive face-to-face lessons in school. With the schools agreement, you may be able to receive an online lesson whilst at school. Please register your interest by emailing us at firstname.lastname@example.org
|I have lessons outstanding from last term, can I use these for trial lessons?||We will be reimbursing all lesson not taught due to the COVID-19 crisis and school closures so that your child will have received, or you will have been reimbursed for 10 lessons per term since September.|
|Can I have a trial lesson before committing?||Unfortunately, we do not have the budget for free trial lessons. However, you may cancel lessons after 1 or 2 trial lessons (there will still be a charge for these lessons as we still need to pay your tutor). We will provide you with guidance, prior to the first lesson, to check whether your equipment is compatible for the portal to run. The CEO of MusicTutors has reported that less than 1% of lessons have experienced issues (the portal has been running for 4 years)|
|When can lessons take place?||This will be agreed between the parent/carer and instrumental/vocal tutor. It is possible that lessons will be able to take place in the evening or at weekends but this will be at their discretion.|
|Do I need to have a Skype/Zoom account for lessons to take place?||No. We are using a bespoke platform design especially for online music tuition. You will only need a web browser on a PC/Mac/Laptop/Tablet or Smartphone. We will provide you with the web address to access the online portal.|

|My child currently has shared or group lessons, what happens in this instance?||We are currently only offering individual online lessons. We have, however, agreed the following costs if you child was having shared/group lessons:

|My child(s) instrument is in a bedroom, can they still have online lessons?||Lessons can only take place in a bedroom if a parent/carer is present (in the same room) throughout the lesson.|
|I am a key worker and my child is in school, can they still have online lessons?||At the tutor’s discretion, you may be able to schedule your lesson in the evening or even at the weekend. We may be able to contact your child’s school and arrange for them to provide a space and online facility for the lesson to take place on the school site.|
|I have childcare responsibilities during the day, can my child still have online lessons?||At the tutor’s discretion, you may be able to schedule your lesson in the evening or even at the weekend.|
|Does my child need to have their instrument at home?||Yes|
|Will face-to-face lessons resume when schools open?||Yes, in the first instance your child will need to return to the same lesson length and type that they had received in terms 3 and 4.|
|My child is still attending school (full or part time). Can they still have online lessons?||Yes. At the tutor’s discretion, you may be able to schedule your lesson in the evening or even at the weekend. We may be able to contact your child’s school and arrange for them to provide a space and online facility for the lesson to take place on the school site.|
|Can my child change their instrument or start a new instrument?||We are not able to switch instruments or start new instrumental / vocal lessons during|
|Can my child take an exam during the school closures?||All major music examination organisations have cancelled examinations during the COVID-19 crisis. We will inform your child’s tutor when this situation changes.|
|If I don’t book online lessons, will I lose my place when schools reopen?||No – your place will be reserved until schools reopen.|
|What happens if a tutor is ill?||
In the same way as face-to-face lessons, the tutor will be able to re-schedule the lesson or, at the end of the term, you will be reimbursed for any lessons not taught.
If the tutor is on long-term sick leave, we will endeavour to transfer you to another tutor (of the same instrument).
|What happens if my child is unable to have a lesson at the scheduled time due to illness?||All online lessons must be confirmed 24 hours prior to the lesson start time. If your child is ill on the day of the lesson, the tutor will endeavour to make this up during the Summer term, which is highly probable due to the flexibility of online lessons. If they are unable to do so, you will lose this lesson (but still have to pay for it). This is our usual policy for face-to-face lessons.|
